The most important thing
I learned this week is that we, as people, cannot expect to change the
environment if we just stand back and hope someone else will do the job.
We must join together in the cause to see a significant impact. I became aware
of some of the bigger issues to be concerned about in the design industry that
are mentioned in Fashioning Sustainability. These are, pesticide
use, animal welfare, chemical use in treatment of clothes, working conditions,
mass disposal, and the fact that sustainability goes unnoticed at times.
These issues need to be addressed immediately. The only way that
can happen is if we shift our social paradigm.
The
learning this past week was relevant and useful to me because the idea of
sustainability in fashion interests me. When I am older and have a career
in fashion I hope to be sustainable in whatever I do. This also answers
the question about how I want to apply what I have learned in the future.
If I am a buyer for a clothing department that needs sustainable clothing I
will be more aware of what they need me to look for. If I own my own
boutique I may want to have only eco-friendly clothing in my store.
Whatever I do in my future I want to be sure I am helping the environment in
some way.
Knowing what I know now I would love to learn more about specific solutions
that people have come up with. This last week I researched a broad
subject on how everyone in the design industry can be sustainable. Now I
want to learn what individual people have done. Doing extensive research
on the efforts of one or two people would be very educating. By learning
details on what they are doing to help the environment I believe I could obtain
a better understanding of the time, effort, and struggles that come along with
being sustainable.
